Mr. Modest Jonathan Mero is a statutory retired civil servant on 28 September 2019 at 60 years of age. He has been Ambassador Extra Ordinary and Plenipotentiary, The Permanent Représentative of the United Republic of Tanzania to United Nations in New York from 23 December 2016 to 16 December 2019.
Broadly, His main responsibility has been to represent the Government of Tanzania and all stakeholders, negotiate national interests in all facets, working with all Representatives of all UN and WTO membership in negotiating international agreements, conventions and policies. Management of relations with other countries governments, institutions, Civil Society and Private Sector, promotion of Investments, Trade and Tourism for Tanzania.
He was Ambassador Extra Ordinary and Plenipotentiary and Permanent Representative to the United Nations, the WTO, and all international Organizations in Geneva, Switzerland and simultaneously in Vienna, Austria, as Ambassador and Permanent Representative accredited to IAEA, UNIDO, UNODOC, CTBTO and UN System, a post he has held from May 2013 to December 2016.

In Details:
- While in Geneva Vienna and New York, he has been a Chair of LDCs for preparations of MC9 WTO Ministerial Conference towards held in Bali, Indonesia (2014), Chair of African Group of Ambassadors in Geneva from January to March 2016, Chairman for WTO Trade Related Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPS Council) for 2016 and Vice Chair of Group 77 and China in Geneva 2016. Member of Selection Committee of Members of Appellate Body of the WTO Dispute Settlement in 2016.
- From 2014 -2015 he was African Group Coordinator for UNCTAD. June 2015, He was Vice President of the 104th International Labour Conference in Geneva, Switzerland. Board Member UNAIDS, ITU from 2014 - 2016 and 2014 - 2018 respectively. 2016 Chairperson of Group 77 & China (Group of developing Countries)
- Prior to that, he served as Minister Plenipotentiary and Economic Advisor, Head of Chancery and Member of UN Second Committee for 6years (2007 – 2013) at Tanzania Permanent Mission to the UN, New York. In 2012 was Vice Chair for the UN Second Committee 67 session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.
- During that time, he was also Advisor to the Co-chairs of UN Reforms – System Wide Coherence and Delivering as One from 2007 to 2009, Member of the UN Committee of the Population Award 2007 - 2013. Experienced negotiator for international Trade, Environment, Development Issues and Climate Change. He negotiated climate change COP14-19, Environmental compact of Rio +20, Participated in developing the SDGs, negotiated Financing For Development (FFD); International Finance and agenda 2030.
Prior to that, he served as Head of Policy at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation 2005 - 2006, and worked at the Ministry of Industry and Trade as Senior Economist 1987 – 2004 simultaneously a Senior Programme Officer SADC Industry and Trade Sector in Dar Es Salaam from 1987 – 2003. From 2004 - 2005 was a Trade Policy Advisor to the Southern African Development Community (SADC) Executive Secretary on Trade Policy issues from 2004 - 2005. He hold a B.Sc (Hons) University of Dar Es Salaam, M.Sc. (Finance) from the University of Strathclyde Glasgow, UK and various Post Graduate training.
Currently: Independent Management Consultant – Corporate Strategies and International Trade.
